Geography

At Oakthorpe, our geography curriculum aims to inspire life-long curiosity and an interest and fascination in our diverse world and its people. It allows for the exploration of relationships and connections between people and the environment and the impact they have on each other. Our curriculum should provide real, relevant, immersive and purposeful opportunities for children to develop a secure understanding of the world around them.

 Aims:

Our curriculum aims to provide children with the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding to become or acquire:

 • A passion for and commitment to the subject, and a real sense of curiosity to find out about different places around the world and the people who live there.

• The ability to conduct geographical enquiries including: proficiency in asking questions, collecting and analysing data, drawing conclusions and reflecting.

• A developed spatial awareness to understand their place in the world at a local to global level and the features and links between environments, places and locations.

•Be able to use a map and be proficient in the skills of decoding, interpreting, comprehending and analysing information and messages from maps, including online sources, to recognise the features and aspects of an urban, rural or wild areas.

• The ability to interpret visual images such as pictures, graphs, sketches, charts, photographs and diagrams, including online sources, to understand what is happening in an area, tying together the past, the present and what may occur in the future.

• A strong awareness of environmental geography and how looking after our environment is important for the future.

Through the teaching of key skills, children will gain an understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. Their enquiries are guided by the core geographical concepts of location, place, change and environment at varying scales, whilst investigating the processes and interconnections that occur within and between places.
